Where can I start building a new shelter snake?
Roof Heating TapesWhere can I start building a new shelter snake?
When I made my first cage my wife Cheryl came into the hall and asked what I was doing. I mumbled and muttered "building snake cage", while sincerely trying to find a small detail or putting in an annoying screw (not sure), who rolled his eyes and wandered the house – I think that shaking his head and, possibly, rolling his eyes.
However, I wanted to make a good cage. I already had one, but I was too smallis divided into two parts by placing a wooden spacer to the center. Halve the cage and was close enough to the ground to avoid the interaction, leaving enough space to slip under a blanket of heat. Which covered about 1 / 2 to 2 / 3 of the cage on each side of the center.
I decided to do this because it is cheaper to make two cages pythons and two children were still small, just graduated in plastic containers. (When I stayed in plastic containers usedsmall terra cotta plant-based skin. I cut a little 'side of the base of the contribution – it's a good thing for children and young snakes and lizards)
I spent two carpet pythons child in this cage, one on each side, but as they grew, I knew I had to do another cage.
So I did some research and with a little help from some pet stores and Web searches, which could come to what I thought was a simple plan of the snake's cage.
Design of the snake's cagethat:
– It 'was easy
– He has a strong
– It seemed
– It 'was appropriate thermal properties
– If an easy access
– It has been blocked
– It 'been easy to maintain.
I think we should go back and tell you how I did the first snake's cage. The young snakes with two small plastic cages degree meant that he needed accommodation. At first, I had to do two snake cages with two sets of mats, thermostats (I know therealternatives), lighting and double the amount of material.
So I decided, after several schemes and violin to make a cage and divide in half. I still need the heat on both sides. I put a partition in the cage. I was close enough to the ground to prevent snakes under high enough to allow the heating pad to slip under Flexiwatt.
I also made the divider so that exactly fitted the cage, but only in place by screws. These screws can bedeleted if they wanted to do most of the cage and build a second cage.
I made some mistakes with the cage.
The front is glass, but was betrayed, do not drag or move. There were two hinged lids on top, one on each side. Having no experience, never occurred to me that his was a poor design. I immediately found. I would have done at least one door, or sliding or down. The top of the door was a good idea, but not quite.
I decided tothe door to my cage again dropped down the door for a number of reasons.
First was provided. They should not slide the door and a snake at the other end, as the snakes do not move very quickly out of the cage. In the case of reptiles and dragons, it is better to have a sliding door or two down menu, or a combination that is a drop down door in front with a folding roof on top. This allows easy access from above to reach the reptiles, as well as ease ofaccess to the front for cleaning and accessories.
Fall of the doors are easier to do and more room for error, such as plexiglass. Drop down glass doors and sliding doors require a little more effort and time. If you have limited space, a sliding door is much more satisfying. All my cages have sliding doors below, but it's a personal choice.
As I had the carpet python, I do not need a UV light – usually, you can use supplements to provide alladditional food needs of the snakes. If I wanted to put in an ultraviolet light of a lizard in the first reptile cage, what I did, I had some difficulties because of the fixed roof and hinged at the front would be in terms of access to install a harsh light. Has effectively eliminated the middle of the ceiling and could not access to the rear of the roof of the cage easily. The device is installed on the same stage in the upper half – something you forgot to think of the time.
Ialso chose to make my heat Flexwatt carpet. My first commercial carpet was too hot and one of my wooden crates sat in sealed plastic. I had to throw away. According to the instructions that should regulate itself and does not require a thermostat. It did not work. So I decided to make my own heat pad and attach it to a thermostat. No problem so far and the results are much better.
To make the carpet, holes in the back of the cage of the snake and dismantledcable age. I have attached a sheet, I bought the computer and connected at one end and I soldered the other end of the carpet. I wanted to use a plug so you can run the cable through a small hole in the back of the cage. I wanted the hole is small enough to prevent escape, even small snakes.
The welding was a bit 'difficult, because the iron had not been renovated (since its restructuring and now works perfectly – you can find out howrenew the soldering iron in my book "How to build enclosures for reptiles.")
I also had to drill a small hole in the back of the cage for the thermostat sensor, which sat on the mat heat. I glued the carpet from the heat with a ribbon, but since then have used a double-sided tape or the tape is clear that a better and longer.
You can put the heat mat at the base and then put several thin layers or something similar at the top. I have yet to try this method. I also saw a snake in the cagetiles are glued and placed on the mat heat, after applying a layer of glue or a similar substance. Now I use cheap vinyl floor heating, it is easy to clean and have a paper or other substrates for more.
Melamine is a good base, it is easy to wash. Silicon must be placed on the edges to avoid water damage and losses of the board, but there is a trick to get a good bead of silicone.
Place the lights in the snake's cagerelatively easy. I decided I was going to put a switch for each line of light so that I can check from outside of the cage without having to beg to find or switch to a cable operator. Since then I have all these automatic timer.
I had a good variety of tools in my shed, but I really do not need much to make the cages. I think for most people, cutting wood square is one of the biggest problems. There are ways around this that the construction of the cage isrelatively easy (you can find this in the book "How to build enclosures for reptiles").
I did a lot of looking around different cages, trying to determine the best material to build. I have mine built with MDF. I use it for a number of reasons.
– It has good thermal properties
– Easy to use
– All right painting
– It 'easy to sand
– Do not buckle easily
– Can work with relatively thin (1 / 2 ") of the material becomes tooheavy
No need to be a little 'cut and recommend the careful use of a mask. It can be very dusty.
It must also be a little 'cautious life. Put too much and damaging the hole. It is not the right size.
I would not advise doing a snake or other reptile cage pine or cedar. These materials can be harmful to reptiles. Some pieces of pine wood for the structure is fine, but not the entire cage.
Another good material, plywood. I do not use oftenbecause it can be chipped. Looks good, but if you end up with a clear wood finish.
I also painted my cages (spray paint gives a good finish). I let it dry for a week before putting the animals there. This is to ensure that the paint has time to heal and that the amount of vapor emissions decreased enough to be a threat to the snakes. You can skip to the head in the cage after 4 or 5 days and the smell inside the cage. When the smell of paintalmost completely disappeared, the cage of the snake or lizard is sure to keep the animals in
After the painting is only a matter of adding locks, door holders and accessories such as climbing branches, rocks, hides, water bowls, fake rock walls and everything you want.
Nails of my children, blue tongue lizard and bearded dragon live happily in their respective habitats.
Good luck.

The Building Envelope
Roof Heating TapesThe Building Envelope
What is the building envelope?
A building envelope is the separation between the interior and the exterior of a building environment. In addition, the outer shell to protect the internal environment and ease of temperature control. Design the building envelope is a specialized field of engineering and architectural practice, which draws from all areas of building science and indoor climate control.
Design of the building consists of four high performanceobjectives:
The structural integrity
Humidity Control
Temperature Control
Air border control pressure of all kinds
Air monitoring include the movement of air through the components of the building envelope (interstitial) itself, and inside and outside the interior space, which greatly affects the insulation of buildings.
The physical components of the envelope are the foundations, roofs, walls, doors and windows. The size, performance and compatibilitymaterials, production processes and details, their connections and interactions are the main factors that determine the effectiveness and sustainability of the building.
The common stock of the effectiveness of the building envelope include physical protection from the weather and climate (comfort), indoor air quality (hygiene and public health), durability and energy efficiency. To achieve these objectives, all systems of the building should include a strongstructure, a reclamation plan, an air barrier, thermal barrier, and may include a vapor barrier. Humidity control is essential in cold climates.
What is a vapor barrier?
A vapor barrier is a membrane that blocks the flow of air through the building envelope. A vapor barrier is an essential part of the building. Since the purpose of a vapor barrier is not obvious, this important component is often omitted or incorrectly installed. Theprimary purpose of a vapor barrier to prevent the passage of water vapor in the air. Vapor barrier and insulation influence each other. Both must be installed so that they interact, rather than an actual loss.
In Barrie, the climate is cold, then the vapor barrier is installed inside the house. This prevents moisture from entering the wall cavity, through the insulation where it meets the cold wall. The hot and humid, which isin contact with the cold, the humidity has created is the dew point. The vapor barrier of 6 mm, Ontario, is necessary to prevent seepage on the walls, where moisture and mold will occur. In tropical climates the opposite is true. I want to prevent warm moist air coming into your wall cavities communicate with the outside and cold air conditioning, creating moisture in the insulation.
House Wrap – What does it do?
House wrap is a breathablemembranes installed directly on the wood finish of your home or OSB (Oriented Strand Board), under the exterior finish.
House wrap has been around for over 30 years – since the energy crisis of 1970. It 'became a hot commodity back to R-2000 were introduced into the Canadian market in early 1980 and is now required by the rules in many cities.
The most commonly used internal layer is made of vinyl baby in the inner surface of a sheet of synthesis. Ustypes as a new version in a spray-on elastomer, which are not so common in use.
House wrap works in several important ways. The membrane prevents direct moisture, such as rainwater plywood or OSB on the outside of your home, while the water vapor to migrate inside and out. Remember, we have created a large amount of moisture inside the house, living – breathing, showering, washing clothes, cooking. The steam that comes into their wall cavitiesshould be allowed to escape back through the cinema, or they will rot the studs and the interior wood and mold.
House wrap also stops outside air into the house. But it is narrow: this is a breathable membrane. Wrap the house has no insulation value, but also improves energy efficiency by avoiding air leakage. Therefore, it helps to retain heat in winter and air conditioning keeps you cool in summer.
The synthesis of the house wrap system replaces theold asphalt membrane used in some old houses, but not many old houses tar paper sleeve. Wrap is much more effective and durable and is available in large rolls of tar paper, which makes this phase of the construction process much more profitable for the producer.
House is wrapped in a roll of three meters in length, which helps prevent the seams and gives a continuous sheet with minimal seams and overlaps. It takes two men, less than a day to wrap a small house with a singlestapler and a roll of tape Tuck. But this is not a job for anyone. We need experienced contractors to do the job properly and efficiently.
There must be a minimum of six inches to 12 inches of overlap at all joints. Every day – and I mean everyone – and overlap the hole is sealed with adhesive tape. If registration fails, the system is broken and you have the air flow and the possibility of water damage.
Details such as the lining around the windows anddoor openings are important. Taking the membrane on the inner edge of the frame to be covered by the window and door ensures a watertight envelope – to provide the contractor does a good job of spraying foam insulation around doors and windows. The same is true for any accidental tears or holes.
Let's face it, in the workers, accidents happen.
Do not leave the package outside the home to begin with the contractor covers upsatisfied with each opening is recorded again.
Once the house is wrapped in parkas news is good to apply the finish coat, the outer layer.
Without this breathable, moisture accumulates on the bottom of your wood siding, brick, vinyl or metal, as well as the outer surface of the plywood. Over time, this can lead to mold and wood rot and costly repairs.
Foam insulation
Foam Buildinginsulation are not required to have vapour barriers installed as the foam is considered to meet the requirements of the Ontario Building Code.
Problems with Building Envelope
The majority of water intrusion through the envelope occurs at material transitions and changes-in-plane. Doors, windows, skylights, electrical boxes, plumbing penetrations, HVAC penetrations and sloppy workmanship are all common causes of breakdowns in your building envelope.

How to insulate a steel building open?
Roof Heating TapesHow to insulate a steel building open?
Outside of steel buildings are an excellent choice if you want to protect objects from external elements, such as fires, floods, rain and snow. When planning to add a steel building, you must consider the materials used. An important material for the construction of a steel building is insulated. This will help reduce heating costs and prevent the accumulation of moisture. The key to ensuring an adequate climate control is to ensure that you install the insulation.
The followingwhat is involved in many of installing insulation in a metal building:
1. The first thing to do is apply a double-sided tape under construction. Make sure you put the tape on the supplied.
2. Put a layer of insulation and to adapt the chassis.
3. Put the insulation on the frame. As you scroll down, put insulation between the frame and canvas.
4. Metalware allow more heat to flow through the wooden framebuildings. Use steel posts and beams from high to add more insulation, because the space between the steel bars tend to be larger. Using large pieces of insulation, in practice, block the airflow
5. Apply the insulation sheet. Insert the metal brackets to hold everything in place on the walls. It 'important to consult the user manual for the specific isolation. If you need a thick layer of thermal insulation to improve thespace, the polyurethane foam can be used. It can be sprayed in the space of isolation and then expands to fit the measure. This allows the walls were filled with polyurethane foam insulation, without adding thick layers of insulation in the walls.
6. Check the insulation to make sure that some of them hang.
7. Place aluminum tape and stitching. Place a paper tape the seams.
In cold climates, the pieces of structural steel will act as a conduit of heat. The heat is conducted along the steel studs on the outside. Therefore, for the walls of the steel structure will be necessary to place the sheet on the outer side of the wall between the frame and the metal coating. Registering and logging the seams of floor and ceiling provide a good barrier against moisture.
Do not ruin your investment, allowing air and moisture from entering the building. When building a well insulated building, we want to ensure that thestructure does not allow unnecessary space within the building. You can control this problem when the frame is complete and the wood is attacked. I feel the air currents. If you feel the air, it is necessary to solve the problem before you add more insulation. With a little thought and planning, installing insulation in a metal building to keep out the hot air and cold air can make a difference in the structural integrity of the building.
